The story unfolds in a near-future where Earth is invaded by an alien race known as the Mimics, which have devastated the planet. Major William Cage, an officer who has never seen combat, is uncerously deployed to a landing operation against the aliens. Inexplicably, Cage finds himself caught in a time loop, forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying repeatedly. With each iteration, Cage becomes more skilled in combat and strategizes to change his tactics with the help of Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski, who understands his unique situation. Together, they use Cage's unique time-looping ability to plan and attempt to defeat the alien invaders. As Cage and Vrataski face relentless warfare, each repeated encounter allows them to get closer to and potentially defeat the alien adversaries. The film explores themes of resilience, teamwork, and the drive to change one's destiny against seemingly insurmountable odds.

After numerous time loops and battles, Cage has lost the ability to reset the day, making their last mission a do-or-die situation. They head to the Louvre in Paris, where the Omega is hidden underwater. During the intense final battle, most of their team is killed. Cage unexpectedly wakes up en route to his first meeting with General Brigham, earlier than any previous reset. The news reports indicate that the Mimics have been defeated following a mysterious energy surge in Paris. The film ends as Cage, armed with the knowledge of the events that are now erased, visits Vrataski at the base, where she greets him without any recognition of their shared battles, hinting at
